About This Site

The BADA-UK website is endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).

Andrew Griffiths, Acting Director of Policy, CIEH says, "The CIEH takes the issue of tick-borne disease in the United Kingdom very seriously. According to evidence presented in 2005 to the World Health Organisation's project on Urban Pests, ticks are responsible for the transmission of more cases of human disease than any other arthropod vectors in North America and Europe. We therefore welcome the BADA-UK initiative to raise awareness of these issues."

What you can learn

In this site you can learn the basic facts about Borreliosis and other associated diseases, how to recognise them, how they affect us and what we can do to defend against them. You can learn about ticks, how they feed and transmit disease, what to do to deter them, and how to remove them safely if they do bite.

You can learn about the risks that ticks pose in the UK, what current methods are employed to control them, and what you can do to create a buffer-zone against ticks around your home.

We provide answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ) and lesser-known facts about ticks and tick-borne disease. If you aren't squeamish, take a look at our gallery of images or video clips. These demonstrate the tiny size of ticks and their physical appearance (so that people can learn how to recognise them).

Especially for pet owners and vets

We have a dedicated section that provides information about the effects of tick-borne disease on pets, what treatments they need and, most importantly, how to keep them safe.

Spaniel with infestation of ticks

You can learn what products are available to repel and kill ticks, where to look for ticks when you are grooming your pet and how to safely remove any ticks that have attached.

Have "your say"

We provide a blog where we post useful research papers, media articles, and any thoughts and news that we would like to share with you. You can have your say by commenting on the latest blogs. If there is something that you would like us to include on the blog, get in touch.

You can also have your say by signing our guest book. Share your thoughts and experiences, or tell us what you think of our site.

If you fill in our questionnaire, you will not only get your chance to have your say, you will also help us collect valuable data. After analysing this information, we hope to better determine the number of infected people, the geographical spread of tick-borne disease, and the level of awareness of their existence within the UK.

You can get involved

Ticks are a risk to people from all walks of life and awareness is extremely important. You can find out how to 'Get Involved' and raise awareness in your local area. If you would like to help BADA-UK directly, how about becoming an occasional volunteer, or organising a fundraising event?

BADA-UK relies on donations to continue its work. You can get involved by making a one-off donation, or by giving little and often. You can set up a standing order, make an online donation, or send us a cheque. Every penny counts and you could help us make a difference.
